This particular post is a nod to two things – entrepreneurial women and the ever-changing Bayview neighborhood we focus on as realtors and that we call home.
In March of 2019 we launched Legacy Real Estate – we are Carren Shagley and Jennifer Burden – top producing mother/daughter team. We have been helping fellow San Franciscans buy and sell homes for over thirty years and we knew it was time to put all our experience, resources, and knowledge to work directly for our clients. The top earners in real estate are primarily women but most real estate companies are run by corporate entities and men. We are excited to break that statistic and to put our half-century of collective real estate experience along with a decade of legal expertise towards that goal.
And so in this post, we want to recognize some of the great Bayview-Hunters Point businesses that are changing our neighborhood for the better and that are led by inspiring and enterprising women:
All Good Pizza
1605 Jerrold Ave, San Francisco, CA 94124
Located on the corner of Jerrold and 3rd, this pizza venue reminds us of the rustic colorful vibe of a Southern outdoor eatery. According to owner and founder Kristin Houk “my business started with the desire to bring delicious, healthy food to the Bayview. So I built it”. Kristin has lived in the Bayview for over 15 years and started her community business with the goal to bring good food and sustainability to the neighborhood. All Good Pizza boasts a laid back atmosphere with communal outdoor seating, chalk on the tables for kids, and a walk-up food truck with a delicious selection of brick oven pizzas, paninis, and organic salads.
Open from 10:30 am to 5:00 Tuesday through Friday and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on the weekends, this pizza joint takes full advantage of the Bayview sun. Not much can beat good weather, a nice atmosphere and even better food. Each Saturday Kristin opens up her location to host the Bayview community farmer’s market.
Auntie April’s
4618 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94124
Cafe Envy – 2305 Lane St
Serial entrepreneur April Spears established her beloved soul food spot in 2008 and offers a selection of breakfast and lunch options from 8 am to 4 pm, seven days a week. She recognizes she is one of the few African-American restaurant owners and cites her passion to preserve the legacy of black businesses in San Francisco. [source: Hoodline]. Indeed that is exactly what she has done and in 2017 April Spears rejuvenated another storefront with Cafe Envy.
This latest venture complements the offerings at Auntie April’s with health-focused options, not to mention great food and music. She even has vegan options! If you have not had the pleasure of eating at either of these yummy restaurants do yourself a favor and head on over. Cafe Envy is open six days a week and open until midnight Friday and Saturday nights.
Fox & Lion Bread Co
5273 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94124
This unassuming storefront on 5273 3rd Street just opposite the T line Muni at Williams hosts two of Bayview’s great culinary offerings; Fox & Lion and Gratta Wines [see below for Gratta Wines]. Fox & Lion founder Xan DeVoss specializes in handmade, organic, artisan bread, pastries, sandwiches and on Friday’s night’s pizza. DeVoss took an important first entrepreneurial step back in 2011 by selling her bread online and personally delivering them to her subscribers.
In 2015 DeVoss realized her dreams of a brick-and-mortar location in Bayview-Hunter’s Point. And, girl, we are glad she did. Xan has created a cozy neighborhood hangout for locals and bread fanatics alike that is open every day except Sunday. We have spent many Friday evenings enjoying time with our family and neighbors while treating ourselves to the mouth-watering pizza.
Gratta Wines
5273 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94124
Sharing its location with Fox & Lion is the “small production garage winery” created by Barbara Gratta, dubbed Gratta Wines. Gratta got her commercial license approved in 2006 and has been part an integral part of the Bayview community ever since. On Thursdays through Sundays be sure to take a moment to enjoy her Petite Sirah or Garage Blend Red paired with a selection of small plates, local olive oils, vinegar, pasta and other Italian specialty items. We have had many fun evenings drinking great wine and hanging out with our friends and neighbors. This is the perfect neighborhood establishment, where everyone will remember your name.
Yvonne’s Southern Sweets
5128 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94124
We have always had a sweet tooth and love to come up with an excuse to turn to the enterprising Yvonne Hines for some of her mouth-watering goodies. We’ve used Yvonne’s Southern Sweets to make birthdays special, to provide tasty treats at open houses, and to celebrate new home sales. From the red velvet cupcake to the Pecan Praline’s you can’t go wrong. Yvonne follows in her late grandmother’s footsteps and continues to grow the family business making her own stamp on our community and every event her food is presented. Her business is located at 5128 3rd Street open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 3 pm.
So today we salute you Bayview. Our love for this particular neighborhood brought us to explore the path of many women in San Francisco who are making the neighborhood grow and prosper. Won’t you come and explore as well?
