Our Cow Hollow tale begins in the mid-1800s when the landscape (named Spring Valley at the time) )was much different than it is today. Imagine picturesque meadows, sand hills, and a shimmering lagoon. A diverse ecosystem teaming with wildlife, where ducks, quail, and rabbits roamed freely (Diane LeBow in Image Magazine 2013). Agriculture was drawn to this lush landscape and from 1861 through the 1870s, Cow Hollow earned its name as a thriving hub for dairies and was home to over 800 cattle.

These dairies relied on abundant fresh water from Laguna Pequeña—affectionately known as Washerwoman's Lagoon. This lagoon supported the agriculture and encouraged the growth of other industries, such as laundry services, tanneries, and meat processing plants.
As San Francisco evolved, so did Cow Hollow. The lagoon was eventually filled in, and the cattle businesses were moved away, making room for the city's elite to establish residences. Prominent San Franciscans built magnificent Victorian and Edwardian homes that spread out from the Union Street thoroughfare.
Among Cow Hollow's notable gems are the Casebolt House, the Octagon House, and the Vedanta Temple (the oldest Hindu temple in the Western world). Many Cow Hollow buildings survived the 1906 earthquake and we highly recommend a walking tour of this area as it provides an architectural journey dating all the way back to 1861. Modern designs stand shoulder to shoulder with historic homes.

Along Crissy Field, you'll find fitness enthusiasts at the workout stations and bike/walk-only paths.
What truly distinguishes Cow Hollow is its vibrant sense of community and camaraderie. The annual Union Street Festival is a shining example of this communal spirit, bringing together local artisans, musicians, and culinary talents in a joyous celebration of creativity and connection. Adding to the neighborhood's cultural richness, keeping an eye on events at the nearby Palace of Fine Arts can offer even more opportunities to experience art and entertainment.
